Brian Kurtz has been named Mid-States Football Association
Mideast League Player of the Week on defense for his play on
Oct. 14 at Taylor University.
He was a nightmare for TU blockers
scrambling for 13 tackles, 8 solo, 3 tackles-for-loss of 8
yards and 4 tackles for no gain. He also had a sack. It is the
sixth time this season Kurtz has led the USF defense in
tackles this season. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound USF senior ranks
No. 3 in the MSFA in tackles with a 10.5 average per game. He
currently ranked No. 3 on the USF career tackles list with
321, 63 this season which is No. 2 in the MSFA.
Kurtz, a
Bishop
Luers High
School graduate, gives USF a total of five this season. USF
senior QB Eric Hooks has been named twice and sophomore
running back Doug Wasylk one time. Kurtz was also named for
his play against Pikeville on Sept. 16. It was the third time
he has been nominated this season.
The Cougars, who are ranked No. 2 behind Carroll College in
Helena, Montana, have won 47 consecutive regular season games
and 55 of their last 58 games, play host to Malone College on
Saturday (Oct. 21) at Bishop D’Arcy Stadium at noon. Malone,
ranked No. 28 in the NAIA Ratings last week, edged No. 25
Urbana 27-24 in overtime in Canton, Ohio on Oct. 14. Earlier
this season MC upset then No. 5 St. Xavier in Chicago, 24-21.
This is the third time Kurtz, a 2006
Pre-season Victory Sports Network All-American and 2005 NAIA
first-team All-American, has won the weekly conference
tribute. It was the fourth time this season Kurtz had been
nominated.
