UPLAND, Ind. -- What a difference a week and
opponent made for the University of Saint Francis.
Second-ranked USF
steam-rolled the Taylor University for 330 yards rushing a
week after gaining just 37 yards and Doug Wasylk accounted for
171 yards rushing in the Cougars' 49-0 win at Jim Wheeler
Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Wasylk, who led USF rushing
with 20 yards last week in a 35-12 win over then No. 18
Urbana, scored a pair of TDs for 6-0 USF -- the first a
46-yard dash on a fake punt and the second on a bolt of 80
yards down the USF sideline. USF senior quarterback Eric Hooks
and sophomore QB Jeff Wedding combined for 221 yard passing
and two TD passes.
Then there was the USF
defense, which held TU to 29 yards total offense in the first
half and 190 for the game.
"We came out and really
knocked the hope out of them early," USF coach Kevin Donley
said. "We got out to an excellent start. The defense was flyin'
around makin' plays, our contact level was good, offensively
we executed very well and moved the football. We started out
the game the way we'd like to."
The Cougars won their 47th
regular season game and presented Donley with his 199th win as
a head college coach by scoring TDs on their first five
offensive possessions of the game. USF got the opening kickoff
and the Cougars moved 67 yards in eight plays, Hooks
connecting with Eric Rhodes for a 15-yard TD, Rhodes first for
the Cougars.
After three plays and one
yard gained on TU's first possession, USF appeared to stall at
the TU 46. Wasylk took the snap and slashed left and down the
far sideline for a 46-yard TD and Cale Grzych added his second
extra point for a 14-0 USF lead with 6:36 to play in the first
quarter.
Just six seconds into the
second quarter, freshman Daniel Carter dashed into the end
zone from 18 yards out to push the USF advantage to 21-0 after
Grzych's extra point. Marcus Rush plowed in from the 10 on
USF's fourth possession and Wedding threw a 15-yard pass to Bo
Thompson and he turned it into a 27-yard TD. USF led 35-0 at
the half.
"It gets a lot tougher from
here on in," Donley said after congratulating the team. "We
need a good week of work to get prepared for next Saturday."
USF returns to Bishop D'Arcy
Stadium next Saturday to play host to Malone, a 27-24 overtime
winner over #25 Urbana in Canton, Ohio.
