Maury Waugh
Defensive Line
Maurice ‘Marty’ Waugh joins the USF staff for
his first season bringing 42 years of experience as an
assistant and head coach at the high school and collegiate
level including nine at Northwestern University in Evanstan,
Ill.
Waugh recently moved into the Fort Wayne
region after serving the last three seasons coaching defense
at Wayne State University in Detroit. He spent the previous
four seasons (1998-01) as assistant head coach/defensive
coordinator and linebacker coach at Western Carolina
University. He was an assistant head coach and defensive line
coach in 1997 at WCU.
Waugh was the starting fullback for four
years (1958-61) at the University of Dubuque and earned a
master’s degree in physical education from Indiana in 1966.
Waugh’s first collegiate coaching position was at his alma
mater, where he served as defensive coordinator for two
seasons before spending six seasons (1969-74) as head coach.
He then spent five years (1975-79) as head
coach at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. After spending
three seasons at Drake University, Waugh coached at
Northwestern University from 1983-91. Waugh left Northwestern
to take the head coaching job at Lake Forest College
(1992-94). Waugh was the running backs coach at the University
of Pacific in 1995 and returned to Illinois after Pacific
dropped football. He spent one season as running backs coach
at Libertyville High School before joining the Western
Carolina staff.
Waugh and his wife, Sandy, are the parents
of four sons and reside in the Kendallville area.
