Defensive Line

Maurice ‘Marty’ Waugh joins the USF staff for his first season bringing 42 years of experience as an assistant and head coach at the high school and collegiate level including nine at Northwestern University in Evanstan, Ill.

Waugh recently moved into the Fort Wayne region after serving the last three seasons coaching defense at Wayne State University in Detroit. He spent the previous four seasons (1998-01) as assistant head coach/defensive coordinator and linebacker coach at Western Carolina University. He was an assistant head coach and defensive line coach in 1997 at WCU.

Waugh was the starting fullback for four years (1958-61) at the University of Dubuque and earned a master’s degree in physical education from Indiana in 1966. Waugh’s first collegiate coaching position was at his alma mater, where he served as defensive coordinator for two seasons before spending six seasons (1969-74) as head coach.

He then spent five years (1975-79) as head coach at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa. After spending three seasons at Drake University, Waugh coached at Northwestern University from 1983-91. Waugh left Northwestern to take the head coaching job at Lake Forest College (1992-94). Waugh was the running backs coach at the University of Pacific in 1995 and returned to Illinois after Pacific dropped football. He spent one season as running backs coach at Libertyville High School before joining the Western Carolina staff.

Waugh and his wife, Sandy, are the parents of four sons and reside in the Kendallville area.
