Lady Cougars roar in overtime to tame Tigers by 11

Fri., Dec. 28, 2007

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- Trailing by 3 early in overtime, the University of Saint Francis got just what it needed.

The Lady Cougars rattled off 16 consecutive points and defeated NAIA Division I #33 Campbellsville (KY) 85-74 on Friday night in the first game of the Shawnee State University Wendy's Classic.

The No. 3 Lady Cougars will tangle with Shawnee State on Saturday at 3 p.m.

"We played good defense in overtime," USF coach Gary Andrews observed. "That helped get us going on offense. They are a good team that got hot in the second half. They had the momentum, especially after taking a 3-point lead. That was their only lead all night."

Marie Kaufman, who shared the USF scoring lead with Toni Burney with 18 points apiece, connected on back-to-back shots restoring the USF lead with 3:46 to play at 74-72. Kacy Blotkamp then hit two free throws and a 3-pointer. After Jess Hathaway hit a USF 3-pointer, Burney then got in the OT act scoring the final four points of the game for USF and an 85-72 lead.

USF left no doubt about the final outcome holding CU to 2-of-6 shooting on OT. The Lady Cougars connected on 6-of-7 shots in OT.

USF led 34-20 at the half, but CU outscored USF 49-35 in the second half. The Tigers had the ball but never got a shot away that could have won the the game.

"We played awesome offensively in the first half," Andrews remarked, "but they got hot in the second half."

Julie Seiss was the third Lady Cougar scoring in double figures with 17 points. Jess Hathaway led USF rebounding with 11.

Kaufmann hit a shot jumper with 1:33 to play in the second half for a 69-66 USF lead. She was fouled, but missed a free throw. CU tied the score when Priscila Alves scored on a layup and hit the free throw to convert the 3-point play with 50 seconds to play.

USF led by as many as 16 points in the first half and 13 in the second half. USF still led 63-51 with 7:26 to play, but CU closed with a 18-6 charge to send the game into overtime.

It was the Lady Cougars' first overtime game this season and the first since they edged Bethel last February 73-69 in Mid-Central Conference Tournament semifinal game.
