FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Inside, Marie Kaufmann was too much for
Roberts Wesleyan.
The
University of Saint Francis junior produced her second
double-double of the season -- 23 points and 10 rebounds --
and the third-ranked Lady Cougars cruised past the Raiders
68-35 in the first game of the Lady Cougars' Classic on
Friday night.
USF
won its ninth consecutive game, the 501st in the 33rd season
for the women's basketball program, and head coach Gary
Andrews secured his 149th win directing the Lady Cougars at
Hutzell Athletic Center. Now 11-1, the Lady Cougars will
tangle with 11-1 and 18th-ranked Aquinas College on Saturday
at 1 p.m. Aquinas stunned fifth-ranked Bethel College 63-57
in the second game.
While
Kaufmann was the woman inside, the Lady Cougars' perimeter
game was just as effective hitting 7-of-15 shots from
3-point range. Tara Dice led the way hitting 2-of-4
3-pointers. Julie Seiss had a team-leading six assists and
six steals.
Jamika Banks played strong inside as well as Kaufmann. Banks
finished with eight points. Bessie Jenkins grabbed seven
rebounds. Eleven of the 13 Lady Cougars who got in the game
scored at least two points.
The
outcome was never in serious doubt with USF rushing out to a
12-0 lead, six points from Kaufmann. The Raiders (4-5) got
no closer than 12-4 on a Jackie Murphy field goal with 11:06
to play in the first half. The rest of the way USF cruised
with a double digit lead.
"Marie really played well the second half at Saint Francis
on Wednesday night and she carried it through tonight's
game," USF coach Gary Andrews said. "With her scoring inside
and our perimeter players connecting, that's a tough
combination to top. We played very well on defense in the
first half holding
them to 10 points." "Our defense has been our
strength."
