FORT
WAYNE, Ind. – One more 'final.'
One final test of stamina.
That's
what the third-ranked University of Saint Francis women's
basketball have facing them Saturday at noon after the Lady
Cougars repulsed a determined upset bid from No. 20 Rio
Grande (OH) 60-50 on Friday night at Indiana Tech.
USF
(8-1) will put a 6-game winning streak on the line less than
24-hours after beating the Red Women when they tangle with
West Virginia Tech in the first game on the second day of
the Indiana Tech Sport One Tournament. WVT defeated Indiana
Tech 73-63 in the second game Friday night.
Julie
Seiss was the only Lady Cougar to crack the double-figure
scoring column finishing with 19 points. Seiss scored 11
points in the second half. Marie Kaufmann and Toni Burney
scored nine points apiece for USF.
USF
only managed to shoot 42 percent while limiting RGU to 38
percent shooting in a physical, frantically paced game where
the two teams combined for 44 turnovers. Both RGU and USF
employed full-court pressure much of the
game.
RGU, which lost its first game of the season after winning
its first eight, really put the pressure on USF in the final
five minutes, but only managed to slash the USF lead to
single digits once at 57-48.
USF
led 27-19 at the half. Alix Pulley, Sarah Drabinski and
Britney Walker scored consecutive baskets to open the second
half and pulled RGU to within two, 27-25, with 17:52 to
play. Kaufmann hit a jumper at the 17:25 mark putting USF
back in front by four.
The
Lady Cougars continued what Kaufmann started outscoring RGU
14-4 to take a more comfortable 44-31 lead.
On Saturday USF tangles with West Virginia
Tech at Noon.
