FORT
WAYNE, Ind. -- Shooting left something to be desired, but
the University of Saint Francis picked up its fourth win in
five games with a 64-53 verdict over Indiana
University-South Bend on Saturday at Hutzell Athletic
Center.
What
the Lady Cougars lacked on the offensive end, they made up
for it on the defensive end holding the Titans to 33 percent
shooting in the second half, 13 percent shooting from
3-point range in the final 20 minutes.
USF
held a slim 33-31 lead at the half despite IU-South Bend
hitting 55 percent in the first half. USF hit 8-of-10 free
throws in the second half and outscored IU-South Bend 19-11
off turnovers. IU-South Bend committed 21 turnovers, USF 11.
"We
got Jess (Hathaway) and Bessie (Jenkins) some playing time
for the first time in awhile, and we got three players in
double digits, a solid outing I'd say," USF coach Gary
Andrews analyzed. "We'll shoot better than this most of the
time, but it's good to know we can fall back on our
defense."
Junior guard Toni Burney led USF with 16 points, Julie Seiss
added 13 and Jamika Banks scored 11 points. Banks and Marie
Kaufmann grabbed a team-leading six rebounds apiece. Seiss
also dished out seven assists and had six steals. Eva Comans,
a 6-foot-4 center, led the 3-4 Titans with 16 points and 13
rebounds. Abbey Freeman added 11 points for IU-South Bend
USF
returns to action next Saturday (Dec. 1) at 12:30 p.m.
against Wilberforce at Hutzell Athletic Center.
