SOUTH BEND,
Ind.
– The University of Saint Francis women's basketball team
earned its eleventh-consecutive victory Wednesday night,
defeating winless Indiana University-South Bend 65-53. The
fourth-ranked Lady Cougars got 16 points and six rebounds
from Jenny Richards off the bench while improving to 13-1.
IUSB's Jennifer VanderZanden netted a game-high 21 in the
loss.
The Lady
Titans (0-11) held a 33-25 halftime advantage as they hit
14-of-35 (40%) field goals in the opening period to just
9-of-29 (31%) for USF. After intermission it was a different
story, however, as the Lady Cougars outscored IUSB 40-20 to
seal the non-conference win. USF shot 55% (15-27) from the
floor in the final 20 minutes and the Titans cooled to 31%
(8-26). The Lady Cougars committed just 10 turnovers in the
game, another key to the second-half comeback.
After a slow
start to her USF career, Richards has now reached double
figures in four-straight contests. Her 16 points in South
Bend marks a career high for the junior transfer from Grand
Rapids (Mich.) Community College. She connected on 7-of-12
field goals and both free throw attempts and also had three
blocks and two steals on the night.
Seniors
Chivonn Keppeler and Nikki Lewis also contributed in double
digits with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Keppeler grabbed
a team-high nine rebounds.
VanderZanden's
21 came on 10-of-14 shooting in 30 minutes. Niki McDonald
and Abbey Freeman each scored 11 for the Titans.
The Lady
Cougars return home for a 2 p.m. tip versus Tiffin
University at Hutzell Athletic Center Saturday, Dec. 16.
