Lady Cougars' center earns MCC weekly tribute

Tuesday, December 5, 2006

Chivonn Keppeler, a senior on the University of Saint Francis women’s basketball team, earned Mid-Central Conference Player-of-the-Week honors, the league office released today. Keppeler helped the Lady Cougars improve to 10-1 on the season and 3-0 in MCC play with wins over Huntington Nov. 29 and Grace Dec. 2.

The Edgerton, Ohio, native, scored 30 points in the 66-56 win at HU -- 20 of them coming in the second half. She hit 11-of-12 field goals and 8-of-9 foul shots in that game while grabbing seven boards and blocking four shots. Keppeler followed up that effort with an 11-point, 10-rebound performance in a 64-50 victory at Grace for her third double-double of the season. She hit 3-of-6 shots from the floor and 5-of-7 free throw attempts versus the Lancers. For the two games, she averaged 21.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks while shooting 78%.

This is the first time Keppeler has been selected for the league award.

"Chivonn (Keppeler) was just about unstoppable [in 30-point effort against HU] despite every defense they tried,” USF head coach Gary Andrews said. “She played like an All-American and is deserving of the recognition."

Keppeler and the Lady Cougars, who are 3-0 in league play, would like to maintain their recent form against Goshen College, which visits Hutzell Athletic Center tonight. The Leafs come into the contest at 3-7 with an 0-2 league mark, fresh off a narrow 53-50 loss to Spring Arbor Dec. 2. Troyanna Scott and Ashley Hummer lead the team in scoring with identical 9.2 per-game averages and Scott ranks fourth in the MCC with 7.4 boards a night.

In getting to 10-1 last week, USF achieved its best start in Andrews’ six-year tenure at the helm of the program. Happy about his team’s record, the coach knows there is nothing to celebrate yet.

"We are better than we were at this time last year, but we are far from where we were at the end of the season," Andrews said. "We have a long way to go, but we are finding ways to win and that is the most important thing right now."
