FORT WAYNE,
Ind.
– The USF women's basketball team extended its winning
streak to nine games and improved to 4-0 in the Mid-Central
Conference with a 74-42 win over Goshen College. The Lady
Cougars (11-1, 4-0) led by just nine, 31-22, at halftime but
held the Maple leafs to two points in the first 10 minutes
after the break to establish an insurmountable margin.
USF scored the
first five points of the ballgame and later turned a 10-6
lead to 24-6 between 13:38 and 5:56 in the first half. After
a three-ball from Kimmie Hummer ended the Maple Leaf
drought, the Lady Cougars equaled their biggest lead of the
period as Angel Fincher set up a Nikki Lewis bucket to make
it 27-9 with 4:39 remaining. Never surrenduring, GC closed
the stanza scoring 13 of the final 17 points to get back
within striking distance.
The visitors
also scored the first points after halftime through Kendra
Fights, but would not find the hoop again until the 9:51
mark with the game well out of reach. The Lady Cougars
rattled off 22-straight points following Fights' field goal
and the cushion never dipped under 25 the rest of the way.
Marie Kaufmann
and Lewis each scored 13 points for USF, which finished with
four players in double figures. Jenny Richards (11) and
Chivonn Keppeler (10) completed the foursome while Fincher
was the lone Lady Cougar to play as many as 25 minutes in
the rout. The Lady Cougars shot 49% from the floor in the
contest despite connecting on just 3-of-15 from beyond the
arc.
The Maple
Leafs (3-8, 0-3 MCC) committed 31 turnovers shot 35% over 40
minutes. Kimmie Hummer and Katie Sowers were the high GC
point-getters with nine apiece.
USF plays the
first of two remaining non-conference home dates Saturday,
Dec. 9 versus Indiana Tech at 1 p.m. The Lady Cougars
visited Tech Nov. 18 and came away with a 64-59 win.
