WINONA LAKE,
Ind.
–
The University of Saint
Francis women's basketball team stifled Grace College
Saturday, knocking off the Lancers 64-50. Nikki Lewis scored
a game-high 15 points for the Lady Cougars (10-1, 3-0 MCC)
and Jenny Richards added a career-high 13 in the win.
"We did not
shoot the ball very well and had some unforced turnovers,
but our defense was key," USF head coach Gary Andrews said.
"Grace is a much better team than they have been and any win
on the road is important."
USF built a
29-22 locker room lead thanks to 50% first-half shooting.
The Lancers struggled early, connecting on just 6-of-26
field goal attempts (23%) in the opening 20 minutes of
action.
Grace remained
cold after the break while limiting the visitors to 36%
shooting. Both teams combined to make just 4-of-40
three-point tries with GC connecting on just 2-of-24 long
range heaves in the game (8%). Turnovers were also plentiful
for both teams as USF out-gifted the Lancers 26-25.
The Lady
Cougars made up for the giveaways and dip in shooting form
at the charity stripe, where they hit 13-of-14 from the line
in the second half.
Chivonn
Keppeler, coming off a 30-point outburst at Huntington Nov.
29, finished with 11 points and 10 caroms for a
double-double. Toni Burney had five points and four assists
in her first extensive action since suffering a knee injury
versus Cedarville University Nov. 10.
Lauren
Zeltwanger was the high scorer for GC (4-5, 0-2 MCC) with 12
points.
The Lady
Cougars continue the early league slate with a 7 p.m. Tues.,
Dec. 5 date with Goshen College at Hutzell Athletic Center.
