HUNTINGTON,
Ind.
– After transportation problems and arriving at Huntington
University late, the University of Saint Francis battled back
from more adversity on the court to eventually post its
ninth win in 10 outings with a 66-56 win on Wednesday night.
The Lady
Cougars (9-1, 2-0 MCC) came back from a 7-point deficit in the first half to
secure a 32-27 halftime lead, then roared out to an 18-point
advantage early in the second half before settling for the
10-point win.
"(Huntington)
had been playing well and we played really smart at times to
take control," USF coach Gary Andrews said. "Chivonn
(Keppeler) was just about unstoppable tonight despite every
defense they tried. She played like an All-American tonight."
HU dropped to
5-2 overall, 1-1 in MCC play.
The 6-foot-2
senior center scored 30 points for the Lady Cougars, 20 in the
second half. Her previous career high was 25 points in
2005-06. She hit 11-of-12 field goals and 8-of-9 free throws
en route to the career night. The Edgerton, Ohio, product is
averaging 21.7 points her last three games versus the
Foresters.
Senior Nikki
Lewis added 11 points, five assists and four rebounds in 40
minutes. Junior Jessica Hathaway also scored 11 for the Lady
Cougars. Amy Berry's 18 points were best for the host
Foresters.
USF opened the
season 9-1 in 2001-02, Andrews' first season. The Lady
Cougars can top that start with a win at Grace College on
Saturday. Tip is at 1 p.m.
"We are better
than we were at this time last year, but we are far from
where we were at the end of the season," Andrews said. "We
have a long way to go, but we are finding ways to win and
that is the most important thing right now."
