FORT WAYNE, Ind. --
Four University of Saint Francis players scored in double
figures, but it wasn't enough to avoid a 103-94 setback to
fourth-ranked Cedarville University on Saturday night at
Hutzell Athletic Center.
"I felt pretty good
about the way we played," USF coach Jeff Rekeweg said. "We
were not intimidated at all we we competed in a number of
different ways. We just needed to play better defense in the
second half. You've got to give (Cedarville) credit, but
there were things we did or didn't do and can learn from
those experiences to get better."
Sophomore Kevin
Sindle led USF with 29 points, his third 20-plus game in the
first six for USF (4-2). Nate Bojrab added
15 points while Mike Steinau and freshman Matt Edmonds added
14 apiece.
"On defense, we just
didn't make stops," Rekeweg said. "We didn't shoot bad. You
get 94 points you're scorin'. We'd get the lead, but
couldn't put together consecutive possessions where we had
the lead. We'd take the lead and they would come right back
and score."
The Cougars trailed
by double digits much of the first half and appeared in
danger of getting blown out by the Yellow Jackets. But they
didn't and grabbed the lead on four different occasions in
the second half.
"It just seemed that
we had to work hard for anything we got," Rekeweg said.
"Whatever kind of shot thy wanted, they got shooting wise."
USF hit five more
3-pointers 8-3, but CU hit 30-of-41 free throws, USF
16-of-21 free throws. CU also connected on 32 field goals,
USF 27.
Ryan Short led three
Yellow Jackets in double figures with 33, 21 in the first
half. Christopher Walker added 19 point, Chris Beals 17 and
Ricardo Alliman 11.
CU won its third
game in a row after dropping the first two of the season.
USF resumes action
Tuesday at Hutzell Athletic Center against Madonna at 7 p.m.
