COLUMBIA, Ky. --
Senior guard Mike Steinau scored 28 points to lead the
University of Saint Francis to its third straight win to
open the season, a 72-64 verdict over NAIA Division I
Lindsey Wilson College on Friday night.
USF, which led 28-26 at the half, connected on 20-of-23 free throws while
the Blue Raiders managed just 3-of-9 from the line. There
were 12 lead changes in the first 20 minutes before USF
emerged with a 2-point edge. LWC had the largest lead of the
first half at 13-8.
The teams exchanged the lead six more times before tying the game at
38-38 -- the game’s 10th tie -- with 14:50 left. in the next
five minutes, the Cougars outscored the Blue Raiders 15-5 to
pull out to a 53-43 lead with 9:08 remaining.
Lindsey Wilson cut the lead to six a two different occasions, but the
Cougars responded each time and led 66-54 with 4:31 left.
The Blue Raiders scored the next six points to cut the lead
to 66-60 with just under three minutes left. But that was as
close as they would get.
Two straight Lindsey Wilson possessions resulted in turnovers and the
Blue Raiders were unable to recover.
Steinau and sophomore Kevin Sindle made six straight free throws to seal
the 72-64 win. Sindle finished with 15 points and Eric Eaton
added 10 points. Freshman Matt Edmonds led USF rebounding
with six while Steinau and Sindle added five boards apiece.
LWC outrebounded the Cougars 38-23.
Sam Walton led Lindsey Wilson with 20 points and sophomore Jeff Vories
added 10 points off the Blue Raider bench.
