FORT WAYNE, Ind. --
Jeff Rekeweg was trying, but you couldn't say he enjoyed the
77-71 win his University of Saint Francis basketball team
secured against Taylor University-Fort Wayne on Saturday
night.
It was how the
Cougars got the 'W' -- a 20 point second-half lead dwindling
to three points late before USF climbed out to the six-point
win in the FWO/Courtyards by Marriott Tournament
Championship Game.
"We found a way to
finish and that's what matters most," Rekeweg said. "It's a
learning process and sometimes it can be painful, but we got
it done."
Nate Bojrab's
3-point basket gave USF a 58-38 lead with 12:44 to play. A
Kevin Sindle basket gave USF another 20-point lead at 64-44
with 9:50 to play. From that point the Falcons outscored the
Cougars 24-9 and only trailed 71-68 with 2:34 to play.
Sindle scored, but TUFW kept the pressure on and sliced the
deficit to 2, 73-71 with 1:28 to play.
Sindle scored with
1:28 stretching the USF lead to 75-71. Montrel Hogue was
called for an offensive foul with 1:22 to play and Steinau
hit two free throws with 32 seconds to play to finish the
scoring. TUFW missed three 3-pointers in the final seconds.
Sindle was the only
Cougar to crack double figures finishing with 29 points and
earned the tournament MVP award.
