USF Second at Maple City Classic, Holden Named All-Tournament

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Cougar men’s basketball team (2-3) placed second in the Maple City Classic at Siena Heights University. The host Saints defeated USF 81-63 in the championship game to win the four-team tournament. Senior center Chase Holden earned all-tournament honors after averaging 13.5 points and five rebounds in the Cougars’ two contests.

In Friday’s semifinal, USF defeated Saint Francis (IL) 85-70 behind six players in double-figures. Holden led the Cougars with 14 points and both Nick Ankenbruck and Dusty Beucler chipped in 12 points. USF held a 37-30 halftime advantage, taking advantage of opportunities from the line. USF went 13-15 from the free-throw stripe in the opening stanza, while its opponent attempted only three free throws (1-3).  

The Cougars continued to get to the line after halftime, outscoring its USF counterpart 29-11 from the charity stripe in the contest. John Gensic led the Cougar rebounding effort with seven while Zach Beiswanger and Beucler dished four assists each.

The 15-point win Friday night put USF in the championship game against Siena Heights, which defeated Malone (OH) 86-72 in the opening round. The Saints held the Cougars to 24% shooting (7-29) in the first half en route to a 36-21 lead at the break. The visiting Cougars picked up the offensive effort in the second half, but could not get any closer than nine points, before falling by 18.

Holden again paced the struggling Cougars, scoring 13 points in 28 minutes. Ankenbruck’s numbers were indicative of the USF effort, as he finished with just four points on 2-11 shooting. The Cougar sharpshooter was also 0-5 from three-point range as the team hit just 4-17 from beyond the arc.

USF returns home to Hutzell Athletic Center in a 7 p.m. tip with Madonna University (MI) Wed., Nov. 17.
