CHICAGO, Ill. -- In the first
game of the St. Xavier Midwest Tournament, the University of
Saint Francis dropped a 78-73 decision in overtime to The
Master’s College (Calif.) on Friday afternoon at the
Shannon Center.
TMC freshman forward David Reichel nailed a game-tying three-pointer at
the buzzer to send the contest into overtime. In the overtime
period, The Master’s College defense limited USF (8-6) to
seven points. USF didn't hit a field goal in the in the last
4:06.
USF freshman Trey Eaton led all scorers with 24 points, though he
made just 7 of 27 shots including 2-for-13 shooting from
3-point range. John Gensic added 21 points for USF.
"Probably the key to the game was that they got 19 offensive
boards," USF Coach Jeff Rekeweg said. "They probably got away
with some pushin' inside, but we've got to toughen up there.
"We've got a 3-point lead with 20 seconds to go and they've got to foul
us, and we miss the front end of the 1-and-1. They came down,
called time out, we defended them well and they had to call
another timeout with 7 seconds to go. We couldn't have
defended it much better. They hit a fall-away 3 . . . I wasn't
worried about the shot going in, a one-handed shot. I thought
Chase (Holden) might foul the guy, and it goes in with no time
on the clock."
The Cougars will play Mount Marty College today at 3 p.m. (Fort Wayne
time). The game can be heard on WLYV, 1450 AM starting at
around 2:45 p.m. Mount Marty dropped an 83-78 verdict in the
second game of the day to St. Ambrose, which is ranked No. 10
in the most recent NAIA ratings (Dec. 2). Mount Marty, located
in Yankton, S.D., is 7-7 and has lost three games in a row and
lost on Friday despite shooting 60 percent from the field.
