The Cougars (9-7) return to action on Tuesday
(Dec. 30) when they return to Illinois to play NCAA Division I
member Northern Illinois. USF went 1-2 in the St. Xavier
Midwest Tournament in Chicago the weekend before Christmas.
The Huskies present a starting that includes 6-foot-9 redshirt
freshman James Hughes, 6-6 sophomore Todd Peterson, 6-6 senior
Marcus Smallwood, 6-4 P.J. Smith, 6-3 freshman Mike McKinney
and 5-10 sophomore Anthony Maestranzi.
Smallwood, a 211-pound forward, is averaging 14.6
points a game for NIU. He also leads the Huskies in rebounding
with 10.9 a game. Smith, a 197-pound guard, is averaging 10.6
yards a game. Maestranzi leads the team in assists with 4.5 a
game while averaging 8.5 points a game.
The Huskies are 4-6 overall, 0-1 in Mid-American
Conference play, and are out to end a three-game losing
streak. The Huskies have lost five of their last six games
including a 65-57 loss at Iowa in early December. It's the
last non-conference game of the season for NIU before jumping
back into MAC play. NIU is 4-0 in DeKalb, Ill., to far this
season.
This will be the second NCAA I member USF has
faced this season. The Cougars lost at IUPUI earlier this
season.
