| Blue Christmas: Another close loss for Cougars |
|
CHICAGO --
Chase Holden earned his third consecutive double-double and
the University of Saint Francis sophomore was named to the
Midwest Christmas Tournament at St. Xavier University on
Sunday. That's the good news. The bad news is that the Cougars (8-7) finished an 0-for-3 trip with another close loss, 63-60, in the seventh-place game against St. Ambrose. "We came back and led twice in the second half," USF Coach Jeff Rekeweg said. "But when (St. Ambrose) needed to, they made plays. We didn't. What's most frustrating about this tournament is how we lost, the we didn't execute when we need to most." Tom Pavlijasevic hit a turnaround jumper with 16 seconds remaining to give the Fighting Bees (6-7) a 62-60 lead and eventual victory over USFfor seventh place. Pavlijasevic finished with a team-high 14 points. Matt Fitzpatrick added 13 points and six rebounds for St. Ambrose. Holden finished with 19 points and 12 boards for USF, and scored 50 points and grabbed 34 rebounds for the tournament while hitting 20-of-24 free throws. Jontae James chipped in 15 points. USF trailed 36-22 at the half after shooting 31 percent (8 for 26). The Cougars shot 46 percent (13 of 28) in the second half, outscored St. Ambrose 38-27, and led twice in the second half. USF turned the ball over after Pavlijasevic's go-ahead basket and another Bees' free throw put the game out of reach. St. Ambrose outscored the Cougars 21-0 from 3-point range shooting 44 percent (7 of 16). USF went 0 for 6, the first time this season the Cougars have not hit at least one shot from 3-point range. USF had shot over 40 percent from 3-point range in the five previous games before Saturday's 6-for-14 effort (.286) against Barat. The Cougars previous low came in the third game of the season when USF made 4-of-14 3-point shots at Georgetown. John Gensic went 0-for-2, Nick Ankenbruck 0-for-3 and Zach Beiswanger 0-for-1. The six 3-point attempts is also a season low. The previous low was 11. -- GO USF -- |
