Sat., Feb. 15, 2003 MISHAWAKA -- University of Saint Francis senior Jontae James scored 25 points helping the Cougars to 98 on Saturday afternoon, but it wasn't enough. Bethel College outscored to visiting Cougars by six to survive with a 104-98 win. USF had drawn to within a point 53-52 on John Gensic's 3-pointer at the buzzer ending the first half. Then the Cougars used a 10-2 start to the second half to lead by seven points on two different occasions early in the second half. Bethel used a 9-0 surge to regain the lead for good, 71-67, and though USF kept it close, BC (20-10, 7-5 Mid-Central Conference) kept control of the lead the rest of the way. "We gave them a few buckets, but they hit some really tough shots," USF Coach Jeff Rekeweg said. "We gave them very few unchallenged shots. I'm disappointed we didn't get the win, but they had to play well to win. You could see it on the faces of our players afterwards that this was a game they felt they could have won." James scored 16 of his team-leading 25 points in the second half. Cleevas Craig and Gensic scored 16 points apiece for the game, Dusty Beucler added 15 and Zach Beiswanger 10. But junior David Keister scored 21 of his 25 points in the second half and it seemed anytime USF got close, Keister was scoring a basket or free throws to give BC breathing room. Keister gave BC its biggest lead in the second half, 87-80, but a Beiswanger 3-pointer and a James jumper pulled USF quickly back within two, 87-85. The two teams traded baskets before a Keister rebound basket pushed BC into a 99-94 lead with 55 seconds to play. A Chase Holden rebound basket pulled USF within three, 99-96, with 48 seconds to play, but USF (13-17, 3-9 MCC) got no closer. "He plays well when he comes back home," Rekeweg said about James, who is a South Bend LaSalle graduate. "He hit some tough chances. Dusty played well despite being sick and Chase is still not well. I hope this gives us some confidence." USF resumes play on Tuesday at Marian in a 7 p.m. game in Indianapolis. The pregame show with Joe Parson starts at 6:45 p.m. on WLYV, 1450 AM. -- GO USF -- |
