FORT WAYNE -- Oh,
those deceiving numbers. The University of Saint Francis
outrebounded Marian College 34-25. The Cougars outscored MC
12-6 from 3-point range and on second-chance point 14-6 and
off the bench 13-6. MC, however, won 68-58 rallying from a 44-38 deficit with 10:54 to play in the second half. Tim Adams scored 15 points in the time remaining to spearhead the Knights' comeback and Donald Yates added 6 points over the same span of time. USF senior guard Jontae James scored 12 points, Zach Beiswanger added 11 and Chase Holden 10, but couldn't keep the Cougars (12-12, 2-4 MCC) from losing their third game at Hutzell Athletic Center in 11 home dates. MC (11-5, 5-1 MCC) won for the sixth time in the last seven games. Nick Ankenbruck's 3-pointer gave USF that 44-38 lead. But after MC lost their leading scorer, Zack Robbins, to a knee injury at the 7:11 mark and USF leading 46-44, the Knights took control. Adams hit back-to-back 3-pointers, the only MC 3-point baskets of the game, to give MC a 52-47 lead with 5:04 to play. It was the last of 11 lead changes in the game. From that point MC outscored USF 16-9 with 12-of-14 free throw shooting. Beiswanger's layup pulled USF with 3, 54-51, with 3:33 to play, but USF got no closer. USF managed to make just 10-of-25 (40 percent) shots in the second half while MC hit on 12 of 22 (55 percent) and 16 of 19 free throws (84 percent). USF led 28-26 at the half. |
