Spring Arbor sends Cougars back under .500 with 80-70 loss |
|
Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005 "[Lancaster] made some pretty tough plays and forced us into a zone defense,” USF head coach Jeff Rekeweg said. “We limited him a little with that but kept shooting ourselves in the foot with poor decisions.” Down 17 early in the first half, the Cougars trailed by just nine, 39-30 at the break. USF held Arbor to 11 points in the final 10 minutes of the opening period to keep within reach. In the second half, mistakes continued to take their toll on the Cougar comeback attempt. A three-point play by Nick Ankenbruck at 4:25 cut the SAU lead to five, 64-59. Needing a stop, USF locked in defensively only to allow Lancaster to hit a runner in the lane and convert a three-point opportunity late in the shot clock. The Cougars also had a 3-on-1 fast-break chance to cut the lead to five a minute later, but a poor decision by Ryan Bradley with the ball led to a Spring Arbor three and a five-point swing. “We got them to let us back in it, but they converted at a much higher rate than we did,” Rekeweg said. “We work on decision-making in practice, but we have yet to transfer that to the games.” Senior center Chase Holden led all USF scorers with 24 points, 12 in each half. Gabe Miller added 13 for the Cougars with Trey Eaton coming through with 12 points in the loss. Lancaster’s 30, combined with the 37 he dropped on USF in the earlier meeting between the two teams this season, give him 67 points in SAU’s two-game sweep of the Cougars. The loss drops USF to 12-13 on the year and 5-6 in MCC play. SAU improves to 15-11 (6-5 MCC). Saint Francis returns to Hutzell Athletic Center Tues., Feb. 1 for a 7 p.m. start against Marian College. -Go USF-
