| Home cooking leaves bad taste in Cougars’ mouth at Saint Xavier |
|
Dec. 20, 2004 CHICAGO – USF had a six-point lead with ten seconds to play in regulation, but Saint Xavier took advantage of the home clock operator and some shaky Cougar inbounds decisions to force overtime, where the home team came out on top 89-86. Chase Holden led the Cougars will 29 points, including five in the extra session, but it was not enough to land USF (7-8) in the Midwest Tournament championship game on Tuesday night. “It is a darn shame. Even with some of the calls and clock situation, if we just execute in-bounding the ball, the game is over,” USF head coach Jeff Rekeweg said. “On the road, crazy things happen and tonight they obviously did but we can take some of the blame for not getting the ball safely in-bounds on three straight possessions.” Leading most of the second half, USF held two nine-point advantages behind solid three-point shooting. Trey Eaton hit three three-pointers out of the locker room and John Gensic added another as the Cougars built a 49-40 lead after going ahead 33-30 at halftime. Trailing 55-46, Saint Xavier (11-2) went on a 19-6 run and took its first lead of the half at 65-61 before back-to-back three-pointer from Dusty Beucler reclaimed a 67-65 advantage for the Cougars with 2:52 to play. From there USF seemed to be in control before the crazy final ten seconds. In overtime, SXU scored the first five points and was not seriously threatened thereafter. Nick Ankenbruck did have a good look to tie the game at the buzzer, but his shot went halfway down before spinning out. USF made 15 threes in the game, but missed all four long-range attempts in overtime. The loss sends USF to the third-place game where they meet Aquinas College at 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. The Saints dropped a tough decision to Saint Ambrose this afternoon. “They have good size and are better than they showed today,” Rekeweg said. “They struggled shooting the ball and will be out for blood tomorrow.”
