Marian's Adams scores final five points to lead 70-65 defeat of USF

Tues., Feb. 1, 2005

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Marian College’s Tim Adams scored the final five points of the game, breaking a 65-65 tie in the final 60 seconds, to lead the Knights to a 70-65 defeat of USF at Hutzell Athletic Center Tuesday night. MC (12-8, 6-6 MCC) forced the Cougars (12-14, 5-7 MCC) into a 31.5% shooting effort and the 65 points were the second fewest scored by a USF team in the 2004-05 conference season.

Despite its dismal numbers from the field, USF overcame a six-point halftime deficit and led by two with three minutes remaining in the game. The Cougars scored the first nine points after intermission to turn the 33-27 Marian advantage into a 36-33 lead. A three-pointer by Nick Ankenbruck opened the period followed by three-straight Trey Eaton buckets in the lane.

The Knights reclaimed the lead, 42-39, on a three-pointer by Adams at the 14:04 mark and a second Adams three at 9:07 gave the Knights a six-point cushion – 53-47 -- their largest of the half. Two more lead changes and three ties preceded Adams’ decisive burst in the final minute, pushing Marian to the season sweep of USF.

Trey Eaton finished with 16 points and Ankenbruck 12 as the only two Cougars to reach double-figures in scoring. USF’s leading scorer Chase Holden struggled from the field (2-13) and netted six points in 22 minutes of action. Dusty Beucler had a solid night off the bench with nine points and seven boards in 17 minutes and Eric Eaton provided eight points to the USF cause.

Adams complimented Zach Reuter’s double-double (21 points, 10 rebounds) with 17 points of his own, providing Marian with just enough firepower for the road victory. Forward Derek Huffman dropped in 14 points as the third Knight in double-figures. All five Marian starters played 27 minutes or more, four of them logging at least 35 minutes of court time.

The Cougars have a week off before hosting Indiana Wesleyan Tues. Feb. 8 in a 7 p.m. tip at Hutzell. USF earned its only conference road win to date at IWU Jan. 8, and needs a win over the Wildcats for any chance at a .500 MCC mark.
