|
Nov. 20, 2004 SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Chase Holden's 21 points and a solid performance from the free-throw line (22-26 in the second half) carried USF (4-3) to a come-from-behind 89-79 win at IU-South Bend (1-6). The Cougars trailed 40-36 at the half, but shot 67% from the floor in the second half to overcome the Titans. USF connected on nearly 60% of its shots in the game, including 8-17 from three-point range, but won the game on the defensive end, holding IUSB to 39% from the floor (12-31) after halftime. The Titans attempted ten more shots than USF in the game, but proved far less efficient on offense. Holden connected on 9-14 field goals and 3-4 free tosses, leading an otherwise balanced Cougar attack. Nick Ankenbruck scored 14 points on 4-5 shooting (2-3 three pointers) from the floor and a perfect 4-4 effort from the charity stripe. Mike Steinau was also nearly perfect, going 4-5 (2-3 three pointers) from the field and 2-2 at the line for 12 points. Virgil Akers, starting in place of Dusty Beucler, netted nine points and grabbed a team-high six boards in an effective 19 minutes of action. Up next for USF is Goshen College, as Mid-Central Conference play opens early on Tues., Nov. 23. The addition of Spring Arbor to the league forced MCC officials to spread conference games throughout teams' schedules. The Maple Leafs (7-2) travel to Ft. Wayne for a 7 p.m. tip.
