Cougars No. 22 in NAIA Division II Pre-season Top 25

Tues., Oct. 26, 2004

OLATE, Kan. – The University of Saint Francis will open its season on Nov. 5 rated No. 22 in the NAIA Men’s Basketball Top 25 preseason ratings, which were released on Tuesday.

The Cougars, who finished No. 23 in the final 2003-04 NAIA Division II ratings before advancing to the Mid-Central Conference Tournament championship game, will open their 32-game season at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 5, against U. of Michigan-Dearborn in the Fort Wayne Orthopaedics / Luxbury Tournament  at Hutzell Athletic Center on the USF campus.

USF men’s coach Jeff Rekeweg, who will enter his ninth season at USF with the most wins of any coach in the 41-year history of the program, welcomes 10 letter winners and five starters from a 2003-04 team that finished 20-15 and Mid-Central Conference Tournament runner-up. The Cougars were picked to finish third in the MCC in 2004-05 in the coaches preseason poll.

Along with the Mid-Central Conference 16-game meat-grinder that includes two games against NAIA No. 3 Huntington, No. 10 Marian and Taylor (No. 18 in the final 2004 poll), the 2004-05 USF schedule includes three members of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference that are ranked -- cross-town rival Indiana Tech (No. 8), Siena Heights (No. 13), and Cornerstone (No. 17).

USF also plays at Cedarville (No. 4), always tough College of the Ozarks, and has the opportunity to play perennial power Embry Riddle (No. 7) in early January in a holiday tournament in Florida.

Cornerstone, Ozarks, Indiana Tech, Huntington, Taylor, Marian and Siena Heights all played in the 2004 NAIA National Championship Tournament. Cedarville advanced to the sweet 16 losing to eventual champion Oregon Tech 83-78. Cornerstone, Huntington, Marian and Siena Heights advanced to the second round in 2004.

USF opens MCC play at Hutzell Athletic Center against Goshen on Tues., Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. The addition of Spring Arbor (MI) to the MCC necessitates starting the season earlier than in previous recent seasons.
