 Sat., Jan. 15,  2005

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Zach Beiswanger nailed four crucial free throws in the final 10 seconds to protect a precarious University of Saint Francis win over Grace College on Saturday afternoon at Hutzell Athletic Center.

USF (11-10, 4-3 in Mid-Central Conference) led all the way, though never by more than 10 in the first half. USF led by 11, 70-59 with 6:52 to play in the second half, on a Virgil Akers (Indianapolis / Ben Davis) rebound and putback. Grace (13-6, 3-4 MCC) refused to surrender and kept USF coach Jeff Rekeweg’s 160th career win for the Cougars in doubt until time ran out. Rekeweg, a University of Nebraska grad and DeKalb High School graduate, is in his ninth season at USF as head coach.

GC cut deficit to 2, 81-79 with eight seconds to play. After GC scored, Beiswanger (Kendallville / East Noble H.S.) hit both double bonus free throws for USF. Marcus Moore scored to cut the deficit back to two, 83-81 with 3.3 sec. The Lancers fouled Beiswanger again, and he hit two more free throws. GC’s in-bounds pass was picked off by Beiswanger to end game.

USF connected on 18-of-21 from the FT line in the second half. GC hit 5-of-6. USF has won 3 straight games. GC had won 4 of last 5 games before the loss.

Trey Eaton (Claypool, IN / Tippecanoe Valley) scored 12 of his USF leading 22 points in the second half . It was his first game back after a 4-game suspension for violating team rules. Chase Holden (Hamilton / Hamilton) scored nine of his 13 points in second half. John Gensic (Albion, IN / Bishop Dwenger) was the third Cougar in double figures with 11 points, six in the second half.

GC freshman Marcus Moore scored 14 of his 18 points in the second half. Andrew Kipsey scored 15 points in the second half and finished with a game-high 27.
