Cougars advance to 'Shootout' Championship

Mon., Jan. 3, 2005

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Chase Holden inside and Nick Ankenbruck outside led the University of Saint Francis to a 72-56 win over College of the Ozarks in the first round of the Embry Riddle Shootout on Monday night.

Holden delivered a double-double with 24 points and 14 rebounds. Ankenbruck connected on four 3-point shots enroute to 18 points for the Cougars (8-9). USF will play 10th-ranked Embry Riddle for the championship on Tuesday night at 8 p.m. Embry Riddle advanced with a 97-53 win over Castleton State.

The game will be broadcast on WLVY 1450 AM.

The Cougars broke away from a tie at 20 and led 30-24 at halftime. USF never trailed in the second half and led by as many as 17 points against the Bobcats (8-4).

Ankenbruck (Fort Wayne / Homestead) connected on 4-of-8 3-point shots. Holden (Hamilton, IN / Hamilton) scored 15 points in the second half and grabbed eight rebounds. Holden was perfect from the free-throw line hitting 8-of-8 for the game. He also connected on 8-of-13 field goals.

"Chase really answered the challenge," USF coach Jeff Rekeweg said. "We get back to conference play this Saturday and Chase played the way we need him to keep playing in conference. He came to play, especially in the second half."

Virgil Akers (Indianapolis / Ben Davis) helped out with eight of his 10 points in the second half. John Gensic (Albion, IN / Bishop Dwenger) also had 10 points.

"Virgil probably had his best game of his career," Rekeweg said. "He had 10 points, eight in the second half at critical times. He had a huge run during a four-minute span where he made 4-6 free throws, a couple other baskets, and with one exception played pretty good defense.

"We got excellent effort out of everybody involved," Rekeweg said. "Justin Jamerson comes in in the first half and knocks down his first two threes, and did a good job defensively. He had very limited minutes. Overall, I was pleased more with the defensive effort we had as a team."

USF played without five players who were suspended for at least one game for violating team rules -- Dusty Beucler, Trey Eaton, Eric Eaton, Mike Steinau and Kyle Ehle.
