MARION, Ind. -- Despite
three home runs including a record setting 4-bagger, the
University of Saint Francis slipped to 1-1 in the 2008
Mid-Central Conference Tournament after a 9-8, 10-inning
setback to Bethel College late Wednesday afternoon.
USF will play Taylor on
Thursday at 1 p.m. in its second elimination game this week.
Freshman Taylor
Futterknecht yanked the Cougars (27-28) back into the game
with a 3-run blast and Jon Saporsantos tied the game with
his second home run of the game leading off the bottom of
the ninth and USF trailing 8-7. Futterknecht set a USF
single-season record with his eighth homer of the season
breaking the mark of seven set by Darrin Bloebaum in 1987.
USF got the winning run
to second base with two outs, but Colin Zwiebel lined to
left for the third out.
In the 10th, Bethel got a
1-out single and an advance to second on a bobble in right
by Nate Long. He eventually moved to third and scored on a
sacrifice fly. Brok Lahrman, pitching in relief of starter
Bart Schnur, absorbed the loss.
"We're still playin',
that's the main thing," USF coach Greg Roberts emphasized.
"We played a good game on offense, but we shot ourselves in
the foot on defense."
