WILMINGTON, Ohio --
Freshman Taylor Futterknecht belted two home runs and along
with Colin Zwiebel's timely hitting the University of Saint
Francis defeated Wilmington College 8-4 in Game 1 on Sunday
afternoon.
Wilmington bounced back
to edge the Cougars 2-1 in eight innings in Game 2.
Futterknecht knocked in
four runs with his two
homers and Zwiebel knocked in three runs to help USF win its
20th game, the second time in three seasons USF has won 20
or more games under head coach Greg Roberts. The Cougars are
13-6 since slipping to 7-18 in a doubleheader loss at
Huntington on March 29.
Jon Saporsantos started
the Cougars home run binge when he led off the third with
his second 4-bagger of the season. After Jarrod Wehri
singled, Futterknecht connected increasing the USF lead to
5-1. Starting pitcher Kevin Merz yielded a pair of runs in
the Wilmington third, but Futterknecht went back-to-back
jacks blasting a 400-foot plus drive to dead center with two
outs for a 7-3 USF lead.
Merz only surrendered a
single run in the seventh the rest of the way to secure his
third win in four chances. He struck out six.
Ben Dunlap knocked in the
only run in Game 2 for USF in the top of the fourth.
Futterknecht doubled and Travis Potchka tripled, but
Wilmington pushed across a run against tough-luck loser Greg
Kerro in the eighth to earn the split.
The Cougars (20-24)
resume Mid-Central Conference play on Tuesday with a
doubleheader at Cougar Field starting at 1 p.m.
