FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Berto
Nunez only got one hit, but his double spelled trouble for
Indiana Tech on Saturday afternoon.
Nunez knocked in two runs
with his two-out double for the University of Saint Francis,
then scored what proved to be the winning run in a 6-2 Game
2 win for the Cougars at Warrior Field. The final of four
runs for USF (19-23) wiped out a 5-2 deficit after five
innings.
"Great way to finish,"
USF coach Greg Roberts said about Game 2. "We kept battling
and it really means something when you come back and win
against Indiana Tech. We never gave up on this game and just
didn't get any breaks or a timely hit in the first game."
USF only managed four
hits against three different Tech pitchers losing 5-0 in
Game 1.
Bart Schnur retired all
six batters he faced in the sixth and seventh innings in
relief of Chase Gaff and Schnur secured the win.
Pinch-runner Cam Byrd and Jon Saporsantos scored on Nunez's
double in the top of the sixth to tie the game. Nunez scored
on Ben Dunlap's grounder that got past the Warrior third
baseman.
USF mounted two threats
in Game 1, but Taylor Futterknecht grounded into a
questionable double play in the fourth inning. Travis
Potchka appeared to beat the throw to second, but the base
umpire ruled it in Tech's favor. USF got two runners on in
the seventh, but Austin Leisure took a called third strike
to end the game.
The Cougars travel to
Wilmington, Ohio for a doubleheader on Sunday against
Wilmington College starting at 1 p.m.
