FORT
WAYNE, Ind. -- Bart Schnur and Chase Gaff pitched strong
back-to-back games and combined with timely hitting, the University of Saint Francis
swept Goshen College 6-2 and 8-3 on Friday afternoon at
Cougar Field.
The sweep stretched the
USF winning streak to eight games and improved the Cougars'
Mid-Central Conference record to 11-6. Game 2 was called
after five complete innings when heavy rain raked the field
and play was halted at 4:07 p.m. Taylor Futterknecht
hammered his fourth home run of the season in Game 2 and
pinch-hitter Tony Drysdale two-run double in the fifth was a
key blow in a four-run inning for USF.
In Game 1, Schnur pitched
5 1/3 innings of no-hit ball until Darren Tronovich broke up
the no-hitter with one out in the sixth with a double to
left-centerfield. Schnur fanned seven to even his record at
4-4. USF SS Ben Dunlap had 3 RBI to support Schnur, Berto
Nunez went 2-for-2 and knocked in one run, and the Cougars
added two unearned runs. Jarrod Wehri went 2-for-4 and
scored twice.
"I just kept the ball
down and we played some pretty
good
defense," Schnur said.
USF (6-19) scored three
runs in the first inning, added two in the fifth and one in
the sixth.
Gaff, in his first start
at Cougar Field, fanned two and didn't walk a batter to pick
up his second straight win. He got offensive support from
Travis Potchka, who went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Nunez, Ben
Dunlap, Austin Leisure and Drew Linder also had RBI. Dunlap
went 2-for-3.
After USF scored in the
first, GC bounced back with a run in the top of the second.
USF took the lead for good when Linder grounded out scoring
Jake Trahin. Potchka singled to score Nate Long for a 3-1
lead. Futterknecht made it 4-1 in the third with his leadoff
home run.
GC, which had lost 15
straight before edging St. Joseph's of Calumet on Wednesday
8-7, pulled within a run, 4-3, on Scott Szucs two-run
double. USF scored four in the fifth on a Dunlap single, a
Leisure sacrifice fly, and Drysdale's 2-run, 2-out double to
right-centerfield.
Rain continued to
increase as play continued into the sixth and after Zach
Reed lined out to Dunlap at short, a clap of thunder
motivated umpires to halt play and tarp the field. After
about
30 minutes, with rain getting heavier, it was called a
complete game.
"Bart and Chase both
pitched well today," USF coach Greg Roberts said. "To win
eight in a row, you've also got to have timely hitting. We
got that again today."
USF is scheduled to play
host to Bethel College on Saturday and Purdue-North Central
on Sunday.
