FORT WAYNE, Ind. --
Jarrod Wehri liked the home cookin' so much he helped
himself to
seconds in a 6-2 University of Saint Francis win
over Marian College on Thursday afternoon.
Wehri cracked a
first-inning, two-run home run in USF's first home game of
the season, then hammered his second homer of the game and
season, another two-run drive. That was more than enough
offensive support for right-hander Marc Gillig, who only
yielded six hits to the Knights.
"I knew the first one was
gone and I felt pretty sure about the second," a smiling
Wehri said about his home runs.
"Jarrod did a nice job of
putting the fat of the bat on the ball and Marc pitched with
a lot of confidence with the lead," USF coach Greg Roberts
said. "Marc moved the ball in, out, and seemed to have good
command of all his pitches."
Gillig also got some big
defensive plays,
most
notably from left-fielder Jake Trahin in the first inning,
center-fielder Travis Potchka, right-fielder Nate Long and
third-baseman Berto Nunez.
Jon Saporsantos singled
in the Cougars' fifth run in the fourth inning and Trahin
scored when Potchka got to first safely on an error by the
Marian shortstop.
The heavy, grey skies
started spittin' rain early in Game 2 and Marian rallied to
take a 7-4 lead before the steady, cold rain whipped by a
bone-chilling 20
mph
wind out the east turned the field into the consistency of a
Wendy's frosty in the fifth inning when umpires halted play.
Game 2 must be completed
Friday or it will wiped off the books. Five complete
innings, if the home team is behind, is required for a game
to be considered complete.
The Cougars' next
scheduled action is Saturday at Huntington University
starting at 1 p.m.
