ORMOND BEACH, Fla. --
Grand View College (IA) scored three runs in the bottom of
the ninth inning to steal a 6-5 win from the University of
Saint Francis on Friday.
In a game that had three
lead changes and one tie, Jason Ogden singled off USF relief
pitcher Greg Kerro just out of the reach of second baseman
Jon Saporsantos and then Brian Perry just beat the throw
home to score the winning run with two outs. Perry went
4-for-5 for the Vikings (5-3).
Matt Degitz started and
went six innings yielding three runs. The score was tied at
3 after six. Marc Gillig came on in relief and pitched two
scoreless innings before surrendering a homer and walk to
start the ninth. USF had taken a 5-3 lead with single runs
in the seventh and eighth. Kerro, a freshman, yielded the
final two runs. He absorbed a loss in relief for the second
game in a row.
Jarrod Wehri and Ben
Dunlap delivered run-scoring singles in the sixth inning
when the Cougars grabbed a 3-2 lead. After Grand View tied
the game in the bottom of the sixth, Saporsantos singled in
a run in the seventh and Jake Trahin's squeeze bunt added an
insurance run for USF with two outs in the eighth inning.
Freshman Taylor
Futterknecht led USF hitting with a 3-for-4 effort including
a double off the fence. Travis Potchka and Saporsantos both
went 2-for-5 and Dunlap went 2-for-4 in the Cougars' 11-hit
attack.
Grand View finished with
13 hits. Ogden, Chris Cutler and Danny Rohrs homered for the
Vikings.
USF (4-11) plays Rio
Grand University (OH)
on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a single nine-inning game that
wraps up the Florida Swing.
