Cougars lose grip on another lead in bottom of 9th
Fri., March 14, 2008

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. -- Grand View College (IA) scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to steal a 6-5 win from the University of Saint Francis on Friday.

In a game that had three lead changes and one tie, Jason Ogden singled off USF relief pitcher Greg Kerro just out of the reach of second baseman Jon Saporsantos and then Brian Perry just beat the throw home to score the winning run with two outs. Perry went 4-for-5 for the Vikings (5-3).

Matt Degitz started and went six innings yielding three runs. The score was tied at 3 after six. Marc Gillig came on in relief and pitched two scoreless innings before surrendering a homer and walk to start the ninth. USF had taken a 5-3 lead with single runs in the seventh and eighth. Kerro, a freshman, yielded the final two runs. He absorbed a loss in relief for the second game in a row.

Jarrod Wehri and Ben Dunlap delivered run-scoring singles in the sixth inning when the Cougars grabbed a 3-2 lead. After Grand View tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, Saporsantos singled in a run in the seventh and Jake Trahin's squeeze bunt added an insurance run for USF with two outs in the eighth inning.

Freshman Taylor Futterknecht led USF hitting with a 3-for-4 effort including a double off the fence. Travis Potchka and Saporsantos both went 2-for-5 and Dunlap went 2-for-4 in the Cougars' 11-hit attack.

Grand View finished with 13 hits. Ogden, Chris Cutler and Danny Rohrs homered for the Vikings.

USF (4-11) plays Rio Grand University (OH) on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a single nine-inning game that wraps up the Florida Swing.
