MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- University of Saint Francis senior
centerfielder Andy Papagiannis has been named Mid-Central
Conference Player-of-the-Week for April 3-9, 2006.
Papagiannis (Churubusco, IN / Carroll H.S.)
batted .571 in five games for the Cougars helping them to a
4-2 week. Despite not playing baseball for the past four years
to concentrate on football where he was an all-conference wide
receiver and punt return specialist, Papagiannis is batted
.330 this season. He went 4-for-5 against Madonna in a 7-4 USF
win last Tuesday (April 4) and was 2-for-4 against Indiana
Tech in a 10-3 USF win. He went 8-for-14 last week and also
scored five runs.
“He brings a ‘whatever-it-takes’ attitude to
the team,” USF coach Greg Roberts said. “He plays an excellent
center field, handles the bat well at the plate to move a
runner up and it is amazing what he’s doing after not playing
for so long.”
Papagiannis has only made two errors in 87
chances in center field and he is batting .400 at the No. 2
spot in the USF batting order. He is in the USF Top 5 in
batting (No. 2, .333), slugging pct. (No. 5, .365), on-base
pct. (No. 3, .418), runs scored (No. 2, 19), hits (No. 3, 32),
RBI (T No. 3, 13), doubles (T-No. 4, 3), total bases (No. 4,
35), walks (No. 3, 9), hit by pitch (T-No. 2, 5), sac bunts
(No. 1, 8) and stolen bases (T-No. 1, 5). He has eight
multi-hit games and is the only Cougar with a 4-hit game this
season. He also has three multiple RBI games this season.
