Widman, Cassidy complete Cougars' comeback from 7-run deficit

Fri., March 24, 2006

Box score

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- University of Saint Francis junior Josh Widman ripped a double to left field chasing Mickey Cassidy home from first base with the game-winning run in the Cougars' 8-7 victory over Urbana University on Friday afternoon at Cougar Field.

Widman's double sailed over leftfielder Matt DeShon with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Cassidy had singled to center scoring Jay Bidlack from second with two outs. USF (5-11) had trailed 7-0 after UU (14-10) had scored four runs in the second inning and three more in the third to chase USF starting pitcher Darrion White.

The first game concluded around 4:35 just before snow and rain dampened the field making foot treacherous. It was determined that along with the precipitation, it would be too dark before the two teams could get in five innings, so Game 2 was cancelled just after 5 p.m.

Widman's game-winning hit came off of Brock Bender, the fourth pitcher used by the Blue Knights.

USF resumes play Saturday, March 25 with a twin bill at MCC-rival Taylor University in Upland starting at 1 p.m. On Sunday, USF is schedule to play a pair at Westville against Purdue North Central starting at noon.
