Closer Look Lecture Series -- Sam Abell, Photography

Canon Explorers of Light

On Tuesday, October 13 at 7:30 p.m. located in the North Campus auditorium, Sam Abell will present in the Closer Look Lecture Series.

Abell is an American photographer whose thirty-year career has been dedicated to achieving artistic expression through documentary photography. He has pursued his goals primarily through his lengthy, in-depth coverage for National Geographic magazine and its Book Division. At the same time, he has maintained a career as an artist, teacher, and author.

Abell’s work is known for its transcendent qualities, starting at the documentary level yet open to interpretation on an aesthetic level. The raw material of Abell's photography comes from close contact with the world, especially austere, remote regions. To affirm and, in fact, emphasize his commitment to what actually exists, he has chosen to work in color and in a strict documentary tradition. He has applied himself, particularly, to the photography of cultural landscape: He explores ways in which places can be purely recorded, with images simultaneously shaped by the photographer's imagination.

Originally from Sylvania, Ohio, Abell graduated from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, and received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of Toledo on May 10, 2009. In addition to his photography Mr. Abell is a member of the board of the director of the Santa Fe Center For Photography, the George Eastman House, and the University of Virginia Art Museum. In 2002 he collaborated with Leah Bendavid-Val on a retrospective of his life and work titled Sam Abell: The Photographic Life., published by Rizzoli. He is also the author of the book Seeing Gardens, published in 2001.

Friday, October 16

“Classes without Quizzes”

This is the third year for this exciting option during Homecoming on Friday, October 16 from 8 to 10 a.m. and 3:45 – 5 p.m. Some of the university’s talented faculty and staff will offer alumni and their spouses the opportunity to explore a variety of interesting topics. This is your chance to return to the classroom without quizzes or tuition fees! Classes and supplies are at no cost. To register for a class simply call Jessica Swinford at 260-399-7700 ext. 6411 or email jswinford@sf.edu and specify the class you and/or your spouse are interested in attending. Here is the list of faculty and staff and their exciting topics:

8 – 10 a.m.

A.        Insight into Wellness 101 (Tom Jackson and Parkview Health Laboratories)

The syllabi will include lectures on cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure (testing for blood pressure will be available), glucose, establishing a low intensity aerobic exercise program to monitor heart rate and calorie burning along with the formula to follow for exercising. There will also be a Chem17 blood test, which for those who elect to do so (optional) requires a 10-12 hour fasting. This is a great opportunity for you to “reconnect” with the “student” within you that hungers for the information and knowledge based classroom setting. The price for the Chem17 test (includes Lipid Profile, Cholesterol, and Glucose) is $17. (25 People maximum)

3:45 – 5 p.m.

B.         Digital Photos 101 - Take Better Digital Pictures (Cara Wade)

So you're ready to take a photo. Everything is set. Your subject is smiling and ready to go and you could snap the shot at any moment. But wait…are you sure there's nothing more you can do to improve this photo? Digital cameras are easier to use than ever -- but less-than perfect pictures are still a reality. If you've taken pictures that are fuzzy, under-lit, overexposed, or just don't seem to look good, this workshop is for you. We will cover some basic things to consider before you hit "Click." They are easy to learn, and every photo you take will benefit from your new-found expertise. Even a beginner can take professional-looking photographs. (25 people maximum)

3:45 – 5 p.m.

C.        “Hello…Please Leave Me a Message” (Campus Ministry Director Jan Patterson)

Consider that "calling" is a lifelong adventure. How do we make a life as opposed to just making a living? What do you need in order to listen for the "call" when it comes? Take a break to consider where your call might lead.

All Shook Up is a jukebox musical featuring the music of the classic rock star Elvis Presley, with a book by Joe DiPietro. The story is based on the plot of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. It takes place in 1955, somewhere in middle America, where one girl's dream and a surprise visit from a mysterious leather-jacketed, guitar-playing stranger help a small town to discover the magic of romance and the power of rock & roll. The loopy tale of mismatched lovers in a Midwest burg incorporates classics that range from sweet romantic ballads such as "Love Me Tender" to the rollicking "Devil in Disguise" and the hip-swiveling title song.

A special "Meet the Cast" event will take place on Sunday, November 8 immediately after the play until 5:30 p.m. located in the North Campus' north foyer. Take this opportunity to talk with the cast members and the director as well as Rick Cartwright, Dean of the School of Creative Arts.
