New Dean of Arts and Sciences at USF
Dr. Don Giles has joined USF as Dean of the School of Arts
and Sciences. Dr. Giles previously served as Dean of Arts and Sciences at St.
Catharine College in Kentucky. He served as professor, chair of the department
of Philosophy and Religious Studies and chair of Humanities before being
appointed Dean of Arts and Sciences. Before his tenure at St. Catharine College,
Dr. Giles taught at the University of Kentucky. He holds a PhD in Philosophy, a
Master of Arts in Philosophy, and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Classical
Civilization from the University of Kentucky.
USF Selects New Volleyball Coach
The university has hired Kevin Lane as its women's volleyball head
coach, Director of Athletics Mark A. Pope announced. "I am
pleased to welcome Coach Lane to USF," Pope said. "Kevin's passion
and knowledge of the game was evident during the interview process,
and his experience as a player and coach, along with his ties to
Northeast Indiana, make him a great fit for USF Volleyball."
A Fort Wayne native, (Northrop H.S./IPFW graduate), Lane has
served as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Notre
Dame and at IPFW. He was also the Managing Director for the
Milwaukee Sting Volleyball Club. Lane was in charge of the U17
program with the Munciana Club (Muncie, IN) where his
responsibilities included organizing team and tournament scheduling
as well as assisting players with the recruiting process. Lane has
also worked as a court coach for USA Volleyball's JNT/YNT tryouts
and has been an instructor at camps for Notre Dame, Purdue, Indiana
and Wisconsin. As a player, Kevin was a Middle Blocker for the US
Army Hanau Volleyball Team.
"I am thrilled to be a part of Cougar Athletics," said Lane.
"It's great to have the opportunity to work with a program that
emphasizes community, academics and spirited play. I can't wait to
get started!"
"I've enjoyed working with Kevin over the past several years"
said Notre Dame Head Coach Debbie Brown. "I loved having him on the
Notre Dame staff as a volunteer for the 2006 season. He has
tremendous knowledge of the game in addition to an enthusiastic
approach to teaching. I'm probably most impressed with his ability
to always find the positives in every situation. I know he's eager
to begin this new position and I'm confident he'll do a fantastic
job."
USF Volleyball will play its home opener against Taylor
University on September 16. USF will host the "Best of the Best
Challenge" on September 25 and 26 at the Hutzell Athletic Center.

The University of Saint Francis 2009 Opening
Gala
The
School of Creative Arts at the University of Saint Francis
has announced the opening reception of Chris Kahler:
Interconnectivity exhibition on Saturday, August 29 from 6 to 9
p.m. The exhibition will run through
October 11 in the John P. Weatherhead Gallery of the Mimi and Ian Rolland
Center for Art and Visual Communication.
Chris Kahler is a nationally recognized artist represented by the
Bruno David Gallery, Saint Louis, MO. His large abstract works incorporate a
variety of mixed media including acrylic, oil, and gel medium as well as
watercolor. He describes Interconnectivity as a concept that is used in
numerous fields such as cybernetics, biology, ecology, network theory, and
non-linear dynamics. The concept can be summarized as that all parts of a system
interact with and rely on one another simply by the fact that they occupy the
same system, and that a system is difficult or sometimes impossible to analyze
through its individual parts considered alone. The concept is closely linked to
the Observer Effect and the Butterfly Effect.

“Classes without Quizzes”
This is the third year for this exciting option
during Homecoming on Friday, October 16 from 8 to 10 a.m. and 3:45 –
5 p.m. Some of the university’s talented faculty and staff will offer
alumni and their spouses the opportunity to explore a variety of
interesting topics. This is your chance to return to the classroom
without quizzes or tuition fees! Classes and supplies are at no cost. To
register for a class simply call Jessica Swinford at 260-399-7700 ext.
6411 or email
jswinford@sf.edu and specify the class you and/or your spouse are
interested in attending. Here is the list of faculty and staff and their
exciting topics:
8 – 10 a.m.
A. Insight into Wellness 101 (Tom
Jackson and Parkview Health Laboratories)
The syllabi will include
lectures on cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure (testing for
blood pressure will be available), glucose, establishing a low intensity
aerobic exercise program to monitor heart rate and calorie burnage along
with the formula to follow for exercising. There will also be a Chem17
blood test, which for those who elect to do so (optional) requires a
10-12 hour fasting. This is a great opportunity for you to “reconnect”
with the “student” within you that hungers for the information and
knowledge based classroom setting. The price for the Chem17 test
(includes Lipid Profile, Cholesterol, and Glucose) is $17. (25 People
maximum)
3:45 – 5 p.m.
B. Digital Photos 101 - Take Better
Digital Pictures (Cara Wade)
So you're ready to take a
photo. Everything is set. Your subject is smiling and ready to go and
you could snap the shot at any moment. But wait…are you sure there's
nothing more you can do to improve this photo? Digital cameras are
easier to use than ever -- but less-than perfect pictures are still a
reality. If you've taken pictures that are fuzzy, under-lit,
overexposed, or just don't seem to look good, this workshop is for you.
We will cover some basic things to consider before you hit "Click." They
are easy to learn, and every photo you take will benefit from your
new-found expertise. Even a beginner can take professional-looking
photographs. (25 people maximum)
3:45 – 5 p.m.
C. “Hello…Please Leave Me a Message”
(Campus Ministry Director Jan Patterson)
Consider that "calling"
is a lifelong adventure. How do we make a life as opposed to just making
a living? What do you need in order to listen for the "call" when it
comes? Take a break to consider where your call might lead.

Phonathon Update
 |
We are all aware that these are trying times. Some
people have lost their jobs or worried they will not have jobs in the
near future. Everyone is trying to stretch dollars as far as they can.
We call alumni to ask for pledges to help students
with financial aid every year in the fall and spring. This past spring,
691 alumni pledged to make a gift and all of those 691 alumni have
honored their pledges with a payment. The University of Saint
Francis would like to thank its alumni for responding in such tremendous
fashion. It is because of alumni like you that our students today can
receive the same quality education that you received during your years
here.
This fall students will begin calling alumni
beginning in September. Hopefully the response will be just as generous
and enthusiastic as it was this past spring. And when they call, please
be courteous – they will be joining you as fellow USF alumni soon! |

LOVE CONNECTION responses:
Here is a LOVE CONNECTIONS story told by
Tom Christle (BS '72, MS '77):
Sue (Sills) Christle (BSE '70) and I are celebrated our 39th wedding
anniversary on June 13, 2009. I first saw Sue in Dr. Hurley's biology
class in the fall if 1966. The rest is history. We have six children and 13
grandchildren (at last count).
Another LOVE CONNECTIONS story told by
Ken Junge (BSE '02):
Jackie (Steinhofer) Junge (BBA '03) and I met while attending the
University of Saint Francis. Jackie and I first met when I was a freshman at
Saint Francis and she was a junior at Snider HS. Upon graduating in 1999, Jackie
started her freshman year at Saint Francis while I was a junior. Jackie and I
started dating that year with me living in Bosco Hall and she living in Bonzel
Hall. When we both were not in class, we could be found together in the Bass
Mansion Library or around campus. After graduation from Saint Francis, we both
went on to receive our Master's degrees from Indiana University and graduated in
2006. In July 2005, after a romantic dinner and during a carriage ride around
downtown Indianapolis, we stopped by the canal fountains where I surprised
Jackie with an engagement ring. In August 2007, we were married at the Cathedral
of the Immaculate Conception in Fort Wayne. Just 5 days after returning from
their honeymoon in Maui, we moved to a new house in Northern Virginia outside
of Washington, DC and started our new jobs. Jackie works as a research analyst
for the Federal Government, and I am an Assistant Principal in Fairfax County
Public Schools.
