Baccalaureate Mass and Commencement Saturday, May 2, 2009

University of Saint Francis in Crown Point has 13 LPN to ASN students who are rotating, two at a time, through Franciscan Physicians Hospital (FPH) surgical department for two days each between January and April. These nursing students are currently enrolled in Medical Surgical Nursing II and Pediatrics. They will graduate in December 2009. FPH was a welcome addition to our clinical rotations this spring as the students are afforded observation of a wide variety of adult and pediatric surgical patients. Students have enjoyed it and their remarks indicate that they have gained an expanded insight of preoperative and postoperative care.

"Faculty tell me it is a good fit for our students and we all have found the staff (and nursing management) at FPH to be extremely helpful. By demonstrating how Franciscan values are integrated into excellent nursing skills, the Sisters of St. Francis Health Services (SSFHS) nurses' provide great professional role models for the students. We are grateful to FPH and hope to continue our affiliation long into the future," stated Margaret Stoffregen-DeYoung, Nursing Program Director at the Crown Point campus.

University of Saint Francis Named to Presidential Honor Roll for Community Service

The Corporation for National and Community Service honored the University of Saint Francis with placement on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary efforts in service to the local community.

"Our mission statement includes a call to service. I am honored these lessons have gone beyond the classroom. I know our students are busy, and yet they have taken our message and made it part of their lives," commented university President, Sister M. Elise Kriss.

The Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service learning and civic engagement. Honorees for the awards were chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovation of service projects, student participation and the number of academic courses offered in service learning. This year, university students organized a day of volunteering in conjunction with nine area businesses. They also raised over 21,000 pounds of food and $5,000 for the Community Harvest Food Bank.

Physical Therapist Assistant Student's Host Health Fair

On February 16, the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) students hosted a Health Fair in the Doermer Building that touched on topics that could be implemented in everyday life.  There were several topics including the body blade, balance, driving techniques, body mechanics during household chores, Wii fit, and walking for wellness cleverly titled "These Boots Were Made for Walking." Several visitors came in to learn how they could change bad habits or add new and exciting exercise techniques into their lifestyle. Two visitors included News Channel 21 and the Journal Gazette to cover the story. Visitors found it interesting to analyze how they drive on a normal basis, and fail to think about their posture while on their way to school, work or anywhere else they might be headed. Honestly who is thinking about spine support when they are jammin' out to their favorite song on the radio? Visitors also got to test the 'oh so popular' Wii fit to see just how fit or unfit they really were. They were also educated about benefits of walking and what to consider when they decide to finally kick that New Year's resolution into high gear. These are just some of the fun ways visitors enjoyed their trip to the Physical Therapist Assistant Health Fair. It was an exciting day and thank you to everyone who came to listen to advice given by and support the activities of the PTA students.

University of Saint Francis to Perform Dead Man Walking

The School of Creative Arts will perform Tim Robbins' play, Dead Man Walking, on March 20, 21, 27, and 28 at 8:00 p.m. and March 22 and 29 at 2:00 p.m. in the North Campus auditorium (2702 Spring Street). The IICACP will provide information on capital punishment in the state of Indiana, and speakers from Journey of Hope will talk about coping with the murders of their loved ones while protesting capital punishment.

This play is produced by special arrangement with Tim Robbins and the DEAD MAN WALKING SCHOOL THEATRE PROJECT and is based on the book Dead Man Walking by Sister Helen Prejean. For more information, please call 260-399-7700 ext. 8001.

During the show, character groups Squares and Triangles stomp around the world seeking a treasure that is being carefully guarded by the Circles. Watching their rampage, the animals eventually intervene, creating an opportunity for peaceful resolution.

After years of operating out of classrooms and rented auditorium space, the Jesters has found a permanent home at the University of Saint Francis.
