A. Digital Photos 101 - Take better digital pictures (Cara Wade) So you're ready to take a photo. Everything is set. Your subject is smiling and ready to go and you could snap the shot at any moment. But wait…are you sure there's nothing more you can do to improve this photo? Digital cameras are easier to use than ever -- but less-than perfect pictures are still a reality. If you've taken pictures that are fuzzy, under-lit, overexposed, or just don't seem to work well, this workshop is for you. We will cover some basic things to consider before you hit "Click." They are easy to learn, and every photo you take will benefit from your newfound expertise. Even a beginner can take professional-looking photographs. (25 people maximum)
B. Applying Emotional Intelligence (EI) at Work (Dr. Lillian Schumacher) This presentation will discuss the basic concepts of emotional intelligence (EI) including competencies (skill sets) that are enhanced as individuals become more emotionally intelligent. EI is about the ability to understand and manage oneself effectively and in doing so, an individual is better able to understand and build relationships with others, so much so that effective workplace performance results. (30 people maximum)
C. The Puzzle of Evidence-Based Nursing Practice: A Closer Look at Some Key Pieces (Dr. Stephanie Oetting) The Iowa Model of Evidenced-Based Practice (EBP) to Promote Quality Care in nursing will be examined, with a particular focus on generating and prioritizing action projects, gathering research and other evidence, and managing the evidence. Strategies that enhance efforts to implement and sustain a change in practice will be explored. Participants are invited to bring a question from their practice area to share and reflect on throughout the presentation. Several useful tools and resources for facilitating EBP will be shared with participants. As time allows, participants will be encouraged to exchange their own experiences of EBP, including obstacles encountered and successes attained.

Melissa "Missy" Ahrens (BS '97) worked at ULTRA Scientific, a manufacturer of environmental standards, for nearly seven years. Missy was hired as an analyst for Inorganic Quality Control, and was promoted to Inorganic Laboratory Manager two years later. In February 2006, she left ULTRA to explore other opportunities. She spent the next year working with her fiancé, Kyle Grace, who has owned his own computer business (pgmdata.com) for over 10 years. Missy was not looking for a job at the time, but happened to look in the Sunday paper and saw an ad for a job fair being held for Alexion, a new pharmaceutical company launching a site here in RI. Missy sent in her resume and was hired. She's been there since March 2007, working as a QC Analyst in Stability and Sample Management. Alexion has developed a drug for PNH, a very rare blood disorder affecting only 10,000 people worldwide. FDA approval came on March 16, 2007 and they just recently received approval from European Pharmacopia for distribution in Europe. Missy says working for a start-up company has been challenging, but very rewarding.
