Cold for a cause-USF hosts Polar Plunge
Mirror Lake on the campus of the University of Saint Francis was the scene of a chilly charity event, the Special Olympics Indiana Allen County Polar Plunge, on Feb. 12 near Hutzell Athletic Center.
Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry spoke, and an Allen County Special Olympics athlete sang the national anthem, before the mayor took the first plunge. The Fort Wayne Fire Department was on hand to cut the ice and protect plungers.
Representatives from Fort Wayne's Mad Ants basketball and TinCaps baseball teams made the icy dive, and both mascots were on the scene. Members of the Fort Wayne fire and police departments, many companies and schools, along with lots of individuals, got cold for the cause.
The plunge raises money for Special Olympics of Allen County, which provides athletic opportunities for disabled individuals. This year more than 100 people took the plunge to raise over $25,000, both records for the event.
